In an unexpected turn of events, G2 Esports claimed their first Counter-Strike 2 title at IEM Dallas 2024, triumphing over the powerhouse team Vitality with a score of 2-1 in a thrilling final. The win marks a significant milestone for G2 Esports, securing their first trophy of the year.
The finals saw G2 battling it out on three maps: Inferno, Anubis, and Nuke, with final scores of 19-16, 13-16, and 13-8, respectively. Despite not being the favorites, G2’s performance captivated the audience, thanks in part to strategic play and a roster shakeup that included Jake “Stewie2K” Yip replacing Rasmus “HooXi” Nielsen. This change made them the crowd favorites, and they did not disappoint.
Nikola “NiKo” Kovač, expressing his elation after the win, said, “I’m speechless, this has been one of the most intense games of the season. Stewie2k’s storyline couldn’t have been better. We won against all odds.” The victory was NiKo’s first since IEM Cologne 2023.
Ilya “m0NESY” Osipov, who emerged as the MVP of the tournament, delivered a stellar performance with an 83-kill count and a 1.61 rating in the final. His comments post-match highlighted his disregard for rivals, focusing instead on the team’s achievement, “We just won IEM Dallas, it’s crazy. Stewie2K is a legend.”
Stewie2K, returning to Counter-Strike after a stint in VALORANT, played a pivotal role in G2’s success. Reflecting on his return, Stewie remarked, “I’m back. It’s probably the best feeling ever. I’ve been through hell for this, and I’m very grateful and thankful.” His impactful gameplay demonstrated that despite a break from tier-one Counter-Strike, he remains a formidable player.
The tournament was as intense as it was unpredictable, featuring lower bracket runs, victories over top teams like FaZe Clan and 9z, and a grand final against the third-ranked team, Vitality. NiKo reiterated the intensity of the competition, “Overtimes in the first two maps, a comeback on the T side, the pressure… in the end, lifting the trophy is all that matters.”
The trophy presentation to Stewie2K was a poignant moment, recalling his last major win with Team Liquid at IEM Chicago nearly five years ago. As Stewie2K’s future with G2 remains uncertain, one thing is clear: his return has reinvigorated the North American CS scene and left an indelible mark on the tournament in Dallas.
